Pressure/Vacuum-Inspection Systems VPMS

ibea´s VPMS was originally developed for leak testing of ends and cans but can be used for a multitude of lidded products (e.g. coolers, engine blocks, brake cylinders, brake hoses, filled or non-filled bins). Basic function is to put high or low pressure on a product. For leakage-destination ibea works with two different measurement methods:

1. Measurement of pressure differences
After putting a vacuum or pressure on the product a first measurement is effected by using a pressure sensor. Then a pre-defined holding time has to be kept before the second measurement follows. The difference value between those two measurements defines leakages and arranges product-ejection.

Predominantly vacuum technique is used with the advantage that the test object presses itself towards a sealing tool by using low pressure and does not longer have to be guided. The mechanical pressure during this inspection run causes a long lasting durability and is free of maintenance of all components.

2. Thermographic Measurement as an “optical leak tester”
During this application, generally known as heatflow-thermography, the product is temporary heated at a defined point to create a heat flow into its immediate environment. In case of transitional defects thermal bridges occur, which can be recorded and analyzed by thermographic cameras.

3. Light-Leak-Testing as an "optical leak tester"

After putting a vacuum on the product it will be charged with very bright light on the outside. In the next step a picture will be taken of the hollow part of the product. If any light reaches the inside of the product it has a defect. Even very small defects can be detected by using this method, without waiting for different pressure values.

Standard systems for pressure- and vacuum inspection

Construction of this system as a clock rotor (VPMS-1) or as a rotary rotor (VPMS-2), its principle of measurement and the number of testing stations per system depend on the clock speed of the production line. ibea´s systems are able to manage clock rates up to 1.600 ppm, while the mostly used application range is between 30 and 400 ppm. 

Those leak testers consist of a constructional combination of a vacuum/pressure generator, sealing tools and a mechanical product guidance. ibea´s concept is structured modularly, that means, in addition to existing standards also variants for other applications can be constructed. Furthermore leak testers include connection availabilities for rotary encoders (for measurement of conveyor-speed), trigger light barriers or trigger sensors and 1-3 ejector stations. 

Computer– and SPS units are integrated in the control panel. Handling is simple because adjustment of parameters can be effected directly on the control panel. In service it presents the currently measured values of each station and the corresponding statistics.

The Light Pinhole Tester consist of a light-sensitive camera (including light intensifier), which measures exposure to light into a hollow part. Light is send out by at least one illumination which is specifically installed around this hollow block. Effect of those light sources can be stepped up by Fresnel lenses (Fresnel-lenses).
